Semear - Sow

"Semear hoje para colher amanhã".

Nunca deixarei de sonhar com o nosso cantinho modesto no campo, cujo requisito mais desejado é um pequeno jardim onde possamos plantar os nossos próprios vegetais biológicos, livres de todo e qualquer produto químico, (tal como, acontece com toda a gente, no meu ideal de mundo perfeito).
Mas enquanto esse sonho não passa disso mesmo, contento-me com as minhas plantações de vaso...

Março foi mês de semear morangos e tomate cherry.
Estou ansiosa por ver estas pequenas belezas germinar!

Até lá sou a babysitter de serviço. Este ano conto rivalizar com o meu pai!


"Sow today to reap tomorrow". 

I'll never stop dreaming about our modest home in the countryside, which the most desired requirement is a small garden to grow our own organic vegetables, totally free of any chemicals, (as happens with everybody, in my ideal of the perfect world). 
But while my dream is just a dream, I am content with my potted seeds... 

March was the month to sow strawberries and cherry tomatoes. 
I am so excited to see these little beauties germinate!

Until then I'll be babysitting my seeds. This year, I wish to compete with my dad!

Maionese caseira - Homemade mayonese

Uma das coisas que devo ter, provavelmente, comprado uma ou duas vezes, para ocasiões muito especificas é a maionese. 

A maionese é tão simples e rápida de fazer que não é de todo justificável, (pelo menos, aos meus olhos) comprar no supermercado. 

Sem conservantes, açúcares e outros aditivos e demora menos de 5 mins a fazer.

One of the things I've, probably, purchased once or twice, for a very specific occasion, was the mayonnaise.

Mayonnaise is so simple and quick to make that (at least to my eyes) it's, just not worth to buy in supermarkets.

With no preservatives, sugars and other additives, it takes less than 5 mins to make.

Do que precisamos para fazer maionese:

- 1 ovo e uma pitada de sal;

- 3/4 copo de óleo;

- 1 varinha mágica com o respetivo copo de medida.

What do we need to make mayonnaise: 

- 1 egg and a pinch of salt; 

- 3/4 glass of oil;

- A hand blender with the respective measuring cup.

Ao ovo e ao sal vai-se misturando o óleo em fio, que imediatamente emulsionará para maionese.

To the egg and salt, add very slowly the oil to the mix, and it'll immediately emulsify to mayonnaise.

  

Guarda-se no frigorifico (a validade pela qual me regulo, é a mesma que vem na caixa dos ovos que usei).

Keep in the fridge (I use the same exp date that comes in the egg carton that I've used).

O limão e as mãos - The lemon and the hands

Confesso que sou a pior das "madrastas" que as minhas próprias mãos podiam ter. 

Mas se à minha rotina desmazelada, ainda juntarmos actividades extra, como as dos últimos dias, o caso piora ainda mais...

Num daqueles momentos eureka, que todos temos, ocorreu-me usar um pouco de sumo de limão, e não é que, as minha mãos se iluminaram de imediato! 

Realmente a Mãe Natureza tem sempre uma solução para tudo, não acham?

Se nunca experimentaram, não deixem de o fazer, notarão instantaneamente a diferença, a pele fica muito mais macia e brilhante. 

I've got to confess that I am the worst "stepmother" that my own hands could have. 

But if to my frumpy routine, we join some extra activities, like from the last days, the case further worsens... 

In one of those eureka moments, that we all have, occurred to me to use some lemon juice, and guess what? My hands immediately started to shine! 

Mother Nature truly always has a solution for everything, doesn't she?

If you haven't tried it yet, do not hesitate to do so, you'll instantly notice the difference, the skin becomes much more smooth and brighter.

O plano E* - The E* plan

Há uma semana atrás o tempo não convidava a fazer-se muito mais do que estar no quentinho da nossa casa - ventos fortes, chuva intensa, céu cinzento... 

Pessoalmente não tenho nada contra estes dias invernosos, talvez por encontrar sempre facilmente imensas distracções dentro das minhas quatro paredes, mas essencialmente porque tendo crescido no campo, sei exactamente o quão importantes são os dias de chuva para o desenvolvimento da vida - "Olha! Está ouro a cair do céu!" - ouvia eu dizer às pessoas mais velhas, em criança. Esta expressão causava-me alguma confusão, mas percebi com a idade o seu significado...

Portanto o inverno, é mesmo um "mal" muito necessário.

Tenho que concordar porém, que tantos dias seguidos de clausura tenham causado no meu filho, um ser todo ele ávido de conhecimento, o aborrecimento suficiente, para deixar de achar graça a todo e a cada um dos seus brinquedos. O que me levou a ter de empregar... o plano "E", que é como quem diz, de *emergência e de escadas de serviço. Eu sei... é um pouco ridículo, mas acreditem, resulta!

Abre-se a porta de casa e já todo ele sorri, abre-se a porta das escadas de serviço e já todo ele sorri e baloiça o corpo, sobem-se uns degraus e já todo ele sorri, baloiça e faz uns sons engraçados de satisfação. 

Depois de meia hora a subir e a descer escadas, a abrir e a fechar portas e a ver até onde elas levam, a tensão foi libertada e ele regressa a casa todo feliz... Prontinho para uma boa "desinfecção"!

A week ago the weather wasn't inviting to do much more than being in the cozyness of our home - strong winds, heavy rain, greyish sky...

Personally I have nothing against these Winter days, maybe because I easily find a world of endless distractions within my four walls, but mainly because, having being raised in the countryside, I know how important the rainy days are for life's blooming - "Look! It's gold falling from the sky! " - I used to heard older people say, as a child. This expression caused my mind some confusion, but I realized its meaning as I got older...

So the Winter is really a very necessary "bad thing".

I have to agree though, that so many consecutive days of confinement, have caused my child, eager  for knowledge, enough annoyance to stop enjoying each and every one of his toys. What led me to have to use the plan "E", meaning *emergency and service stairs (in Portuguese stair = escadas). I know ... it's a bit ridiculous, but believe me, it works!

At our house's door opening, he starts to smile , at the service stairs door opening, he not only smiles but also balances is body, at the climbing up the stairs, he smiles, balances his body and makes funny noises of satisfaction.

After half an hour of climbing up and down the stairs, opening and closing doors to see where they lead to, he returns home a happy little man... and ready for a good " disinfection "!

Como aplicar papel de parede - How to apply wallpaper

Este fim-de-semana foi dedicado (quase inteiramente) à bricolage.

Inicialmente, achávamos que o segundo maior quarto da casa, era o mais indicado para o Salvador, pois poderia brincar mais à vontade. Na prática, porém, noventa por cento do seu tempo é passado junto de nós, e o não usufruto desse espaço extra, na sua plenitude, causava dois "problemas": Por um lado, o quarto tornava-se pouco acolhedor; por outro o meu atelier / quarto de visitas / e também, quarto de brincadeira, estava a tornar-se demasiado pequeno...
Por tudo isto, embrenhamos-nos deleitados nesta tarefa de mudar o Salvador de quarto.

As imagens behind the scenes que preparei para este post, pretendem ser um tutorial para os vossos eventuais projectos. 

Animem-se!! Esta tarefa não custa mais de 120€, e tenho a certeza de que se vão divertir imenso a sujar as mãos!

This week-end was, (almost entirely), dedicated to DIYing. 

Initially, we thought that the second larger room of the house would be the best for Salvador, as he'd have plenty of space to play. The reality, though, is that ninety percent of his time is spent with us. And the non enjoyment of that, extra space, in its fullness, was causing us two "problems": On one hand, the room wasn't cosy enough; on the other hand my atelier / guest room / and playroom, too, was becoming too small... Therefore we, delightedly, embraced this task of moving Salvador to another room. 

The behind the scenes images, that I prepared for this post, intended to be, a kind of tutorial, for your eventual projects. 

You've got to cheer up, as this task won't cost you much more than 120€, and you'll surely have plenty of fun getting your hands dirty!

O material que utilizei para conseguir o look romântico (versão menino), de que tanto gosto:

The material that I used to get the romantic look (baby boy version), that I love so much :

Ter em atenção:

1. A tinta para madeiras, deve ser própria para quartos de crianças;

2. Os vários rolos de papel devem ter o mesmo batch number (ver imagem abaixo)- que assegura a mesma tonalidade de cor; 

3. A cola deve adequar-se ao papel que irão colocar, há cola que se aplica na parede e outra que se aplica no papel (ver imagem, abaixo), procurem o símbolo na etiqueta do papel.

Be aware of: 

1. The wood paint, must be children's friendly; 

2. The wallpaper rolls to be used, must have the same batch number (see picture below) - it ensures the same color tone; 

3. The wallpaper adhesive must be adequate to the wallpaper you'll use, there is wallpaper adhesive to apply on walls, and another to apply on the wallpaper itself (see picture below), look for the symbol in the wallpaper label.

Passo 1 - Ripas de madeira

Step 1 - Wood slats

1. Medir e marcar, a lápis, a altura a que se querem colocar as ripas de madeira, (eu coloquei a 1,20m);

1. Measure and mark, with a pencil, the height you wish the wood slats to be (I measured 1,20m);

2. Cortar as ripas de madeira. 

Para os recantos, vão precisar de cortar ângulos, mas é fácil com a ajuda da caixa de corte angular;

2. Cut the wood slats. 

For the corners, you'll need to cut in angles, but it's easy with the mitre box help;

3. Colar as tiras de madeira na parede, à altura definida, com a cola extra forte;

3. Apply the express glue to the wood  slats, and those to the wall, at the set height;

4. Colocar a fita de pintura, ao longo da parte superior das ripas de madeira (por baixo não é preciso porque se irá cobrir com o papel de parede);

4. Place the masking tape along the top of the wood slats (there's no need to do it below because later will be covering it with the wallpaper);

5. Pintar as ripas (eu dei três demãos, porque não apliquei qualquer tratamento à madeira);

5. Paint the slats (I appplyed 3 coats, because I haven't used any undercoat);

Passo 2 - Papel de Parede

Step 2 - Wallpaper

1. Pincelar a parede de cola;

1. Brush the wall with the adhesive;

2. Aplicar o papel de parede (começando num dos extremos da divisão) acertando com o anterior - após a primeira tira ser colocada. Convém deixar sempre uns centimetros acima da ripa de madeira, para evitar falhas de corte;

2. Apply the wallpaper (starting from the far corner of the room) setting with the previous - after the first strip is applied, it is appropriate to leave a few centimeters above the wood slats, to avoid cutting faults;

3.  Cortar o papel à volta das eventuais tomadas;

3. Cut the wallpaper around eventual plugs;

4. Cortar o papel;  em cima e em baixo;

4. Cut the wallpaper at the top and at the bottom;

5. Retirar a fita de pintura, e está pronto!

5. Take the masking tape, and it's ready!

Atualizar as cortinas - Curtains update

Quando o Salvador nasceu uma das prendinhas que recebeu, foi esta amorosa bandeirola em diferentes tecidos Laura Ashley, (deixo aqui o link, pois vale bem a pena passear os olhos pelo site).

Eu soube de imediato que haveria de fazer algo único com ela, mas enquanto a ideia não surgia, foi ficando literalmente colada na parede... 

Na semana passada, enquanto colocava o Salvador no canguru para fazermos uma "corrida", olhei pela janela e vi naquele instante, o destino que lhe iria dar. 

As cortinas eram simplesmente azuis - ora se eu aplicasse a bandeirola nas cortinas - acontecia um Yin Yang!

Este tipo de técnica é muito interessante, porque permite diferenciar e personalizar por completo um elemento corrente no mercado, de uma forma muito simples.

When Salvador was born one of the gifts he received, was this lovely bunting flag with different Laura Ashley fabrics, (I'll leave the link here, as it's well worth, making a virtual visit).

I knew immediately that I would do something unique with it, but while the idea didn't arise, that adorable  beauty was left alone glued to the wall ... 

Last week, while accommodating Salvador into the baby carrier, to go out for a "run", I looked out to the window and saw in that very moment it's fate. 

The curtains were simply blue - so if I would apply the bunting in the curtains - a Yin Yang could happen! 

This kind of technique is very interesting, because it allows differentiation and customization of a standard element in the market, made in a simple way.
